Mopar

From the early 60's Mopar took off and never looked back. With the introduction of the 426 Max Wedge it was Mopar all the way... and catch-up for GM and Ford. Both Dodge and Plymouth took bold chances with their designs.

The introduction of Road Runner in 1968 proved to be a tremendous success for Chrysler.  The 68 bird out performed all expectations in sales and performance. The 69 model was released with additional options and an overall cleaner look... and did so well it was chosen 'Car of the Year' by Motor Trend.

To this day, the 69 Road Runner continues to be one of the most sought after of the Mopar lineup...

Follow the complete makeover of this 1969 Plymouth Road Runner... from its journey across country to its new home in Southern California

These first five photos were taken from the website ad...

Upon arrival the car was given a thorough inspection... and the plan was quickly set into motion. First on the agenda was to get the car registered in California.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Next the car was taken to the shop where the "correct" restoration process has begun... top-to-bottom... front-to-back makeover. This will include a substantial (and we're talking huge) engine and drivetrain upgrade!

The Road Runner currently resides at "Autotyme Automotive" in Vista, CA.

Autotyme's specialty is Toyota and Lexus... however, they "excel" in just about anything on wheels... and yes, this includes 1969 Plymouth Road Runner... who knew!!

The crew at Autotyme do know their stuff... and were anxious to get their hands on this legendary Mopar car. Unfortunately, the numbers-matching
383 was just too far gone to save...  just could not be saved!!.

The
suspension will all be coming out as well and replaced with all new components... nothing going in this car will be made in China! If it doesn't say made in the USA... it won't go on the car. In some cases, it will take a lot of research; but nevertheless, everything that goes on the car must be made right here in the USA!

Above, the "HEMI" leaf springs; the B&M Transmission and the Cragar Classic (chrome SS) Wheels are just a few examples of the parts (made in the USA) that will be going on the car.

NOTE: When the term "American Muscle" is used or referenced when referring to, or describing, cars of the 60's and 70's... several cars will usually come to mind... to be fair, there were a few outstanding GM products; a couple Fords to take seriously and... who can forget the legendary 64' GTO (the God Father of America's first legitimate Muscle Car).  It's been said... not quite sure who said it... but it has nevertheless been said... the 1969 Plymouth Road Runner is considered to be the (poster-child) of American Muscle!  Does make sense, Chrysler just took a hint from Pontiac... and took it a step further!!

Back to our build... after lengthy discussions as to where this build was headed with respects to the power plant (other than the already planned EZ FAST 2.0 EFI system and electronic fuel management system)... the decision was made to move the engine part of the project to Machine Tech Racing Engines in Oceanside, CA.

UPDATE - June 23, 2015

Things are moving forward... but miles to go before this bird is out flying down the roadways of Southern California.

The new 3:91 posi with super-duty axles have been assembled.  Not such a straightforward task as anticipated due to the change from the outdated drum brakes to the custom (for Road Runners) Wilwood setup (front and back)... but it is, nevertheless, coming together.  The front disks... not an issue, but the rear... a whole other challenge!!

Soon we'll be moving into the electronic... can't wait!!  Everything must go, and be replaced with modern technology. Everything will look exactly the same (same ol' crazy toggles; gigantic bulging dash and strange looking steering wheel) but behind the scenes, all heavy-duty products at work making everything come together... without (hopefully) anything melting or catching on fire!!

UPDATE ON THE PROGRESS

Pretty much everything on the underside of the car has been removed. The only thing remaining is the front suspension and wheel components.  Starting at the rear of the car (from the bottom) years of various color combinations and gobs of undercoating splatter has been meticulously removed... the surface taken down to bare metal... thoroughly inspected for any imperfections or rust... and coated with (heat/rust-resistant) primer in preparation for the deep gloss black paint that will cover the entire undercarriage. The black will stop just short of the firewall… where F8 Ivy Green will be applied throughout the engine compartment (to match the F8 Ivy Green that will eventually cover the exterior). The final transformation will be to take the car from the current medium blue with white interior to the ivy green with all black interior. The seats (which are in fantastic condition) will be recovered in black leather with a change in the pattern.  Everything else (dash; doors; sides; kick panels; carpeting, and headliner) will retain the period correct look (from blue to black). When it’s all said and done, the car will basically look like a stock 69 Road Runner (inside and out). However, close inspection will certainly uncover the dramatic upgrades throughout… designed to handle big HP and torque… and deliver driving pleasure with power everything… power steering; power Wilwood brakes (front and back); air conditioning… and a 509 stroker to make it all come to life!

What makes the Mopar Guy (and Gal) Tick

It's a fair statement to make that people who like muscle cars are among the most stubborn, thickheaded, opinionated, old-school humans on the planet.  Now take that recipe and add a quart of vinegar, a handful of horseradish, and a pound of habanero peppers... Now you've got the typical Mopar owner!
